Feudalism
A term never used in the Middle Ages that was later applied to the political and economic system in which lords and vassals provided each other with certain obligations. Often, this two-way obligatory arrangement would involve the lord conditionally granting fiefs to vassals. Feudalism was derived from the Latin word feudum.
