Medieval Glossary
Trencher
Trenchers were used to serve and eat food, similar in many ways to modern day plates. Stale loaves of bread (or stale crusts of bread) were used to pick and/or soak up food and eat it. Leftover bits of trenchers were often either thrown to the dogs or distributed to the poor as alms.
