Aucassin and Nicolette
I
Sung
Who would like to hear a good verse
That, to divert himself, an old gentleman wrote
About two beautiful young people,
Nicolette and Aucassin,
About the torments they suffered
And the exploits he accomplished
for his luminous-faced friend?
If the melody is sweet, the text is beautiful,
fine and well-composed.
No one is so dejected
so afflicted and in a sad state,
so gravely ill
that he can't recover, in time, health,
joy and vigor,
so the story is one of great sweetness.
