Aucassin and Nicolette
XIII
Sung
Nicolette of the luminous face
hid herself against a pillar,
she heard Aucassin cry
and felt sorry for her friend;
so she spoke, revealed to him her thoughts:
"Aucassin, noble and valiant lord,
young rich man with nobility and lands,
what use is it to lament,
to complain and cry
because I will never be yours?
Your father hates me,
as do all your elders.
Because of you, I will travel the sea
and take myself away to other kingdoms."
She cut off a lock of her hair
and threw it inside.
Aucassin seized it, the valiant lord,
he revered it,
kissed it, held it in his arms,
then placed it against his heart;
and he started crying again
for his friend.
