Aucassin and Nicolette
XXXI
Sung
Aucassin had stopped,
intent on his saddle's pommel,
and he started to contemplate
this violent battle line.
The combatants were equipped
with many fresh cheeses,
overripe orchard apples,
and huge meadow mushrooms.
Whoever most muddied the river's ford
was proclaimed the prince of knights.
Aucassin, the noble and valiant,
started to look at them,
and laughed.
